There’s an old Chinese saying that goes: “Kill the chicken to scare the monkey.”

Roughly translated it means the best way to intimidate a big rival is to destroy a smaller one.

But what happens after that? One man in China appears to have just found out.

In a curious court case being reported in the country’s state-owned media, a man identified only by his surname Gu was this week sentenced to prison after a court found him guilty of scaring to death 1,100 chickens that belonged to a neighbor with whom he was feuding.

The pair had reportedly been squabbling since the neighbor, Zhong, cut down Gu’s trees without permission in April 2022.

The court in Hengyang county of central China’s Hunan province heard that Gu had responded by sneaking onto Zhong’s chicken farm during the night on more than one occasion.

It is unclear what Gu’s intentions were but the flashlight he used caused the flock to panic and as the birds crowded into a corner in fear, hundreds of them died in the ensuing crush.
The first time Gu trespassed onto his neighbor’s property, he caused a crush in which 500 chickens died. He was apprehended by police and forced to pay Zhong compensation of 3,000 yuan ($436).

But he didn’t stop there and returned to Zhong’s property a second time, this time killing 640 chickens.

On Tuesday, the Hengyang court ruled that Gu had intentionally caused “property loss” to Zhong.
Chinese authorities said that the 1,100 dead chickens were estimated to be worth a total of 13,840 yuan ($2,015).

The court ordered Gu to serve six months in prison with one year of probation – a sentence it said took into account the remorse Gu had shown for his crime.
Guilty of scaring to death 1,100 chickens. OMG! Should this be in the news?

What a crazy world! Thanks for sharing the article!

I never really considered that taking photos, with flash, of animals can lead to such dire consequences.
So a warning to others - disrespecting such rules can result in devastating losses.

Rabbits are very fragile. We used to have some. They also can be very sweet or very mean. The does (doe-females) can actually be pretty mean and I found the happiest and more gentle were the bucks (males). Go figure?
Rabbits? Mean? Wow.

They can bite and with their back legs they can really get you with their claws....not too much different then most pocket pets like hamsters etc. just a bigger threat. If you spay or neuter rabbits their personalities are much better. ;)

Sounds like it's not just dogs I need to be scared of then, lol :p

Any animal can turn on you and sometimes you don't expect it, even the nice ones. The thing about animals as they are keen on your fear. If I was to hold a little critter, I'd just wear gloves. I had a guinea pig bite me once though in my palm and yet, I was the hand to feed it. :p

Yeah, especially if you do something to annoy the animal! It happens to vets a lot especially when giving injections. Cats bite, believe it or not

How painful was the bite?

The man was not sentenced to prison just for scaring chickens to death, he was sentenced for causing financial damages to another person. When you cause financial damage, I think it is a crime in almost all countries.
Sure but this is a peculiar case where it was indirect. Not sure it should meet the definition of manslaughter, even. Not sure if having a feud would amount of negligence? Definitely an unusual case, to say the least.

In our country, there are also laws that send people to jail for hurting or killing animals. You can kill animals for food but you are not allowed to torture animals and kill animals for sport/fun. You can be fined $500 just for hurting animals and sent to 3 years in prison for killing animals. It does not matter whether the animal is yours or someone else's.

How do they prove the intent? I imagine it's quite hard to enforce.
Here in the UK you need a firearms license and either own the land or have written consent from the landowner to shoot on their land. I reckon it's the same in most countries
Also there are different types of rules for different types of animals.

As someone who is against any kind of cruelty or causing unnecessary stress to animals, I feel the guy does deserve to be punished especially since he scared them to death and that would not have happened otherwise but I do not feel it was news article worthy.

You can always tell when there is a slow news day :)
