No named officials have commented, but there have been reports from various sources that an agreement could be signed before the end of the month.

Again, the terms of such a deal have not been made public.

But they are said to include commitments to pay the wages of public employees and reopen all ports and airports - as well as more ambitious goals, such as rebuilding the country, the exit of foreign forces and a political transition. All of these have been stumbling blocks in the past.

This initiative is itself in parallel with a UN process, which resulted in a temporary ceasefire last year.

During the period of the truce, various confidence-building measures were able to go ahead and those have continued, including the easing of restrictions on imports and the exchange of prisoners.

The conflict in Yemen is complex - a permanent ceasefire between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis wouldn't necessarily bring an end to all fighting.
Other factions, including Al-Qaeda, have their own battles still to fight.

But the proxy war between the Saudis and Iran does look like it is coming to an end - with the two regional rivals now committed to a rapprochement that will see them reopen diplomatic missions.

At least 78 people have been killed in a crush at a school in the Yemeni capital Sanaa during a distribution of charity for Ramadan, officials say

Hundreds of people were trying to get into a school in Sanaa to receive charity handouts.

Video footage on social media shows chaotic scenes after the incident in the Bab-al-Yemen area of the city.

Reuters news agency reports that hundreds of people crowded into the school to receive donations which amounted to about $9 (£7) per person.
Houthi rebels have run the city since they drove out the government in 2015.

Those responsible for the distribution have been detained and an investigation is under way, the interior ministry said.
Many people were also injured with 13 in a critical situation, a health official in Sanaa said.

The Associated Press news agency quotes two eyewitnesses who said Houthi fighters had fired into the air in an attempt at crowd control, apparently striking an electrical wire which resulted in an explosion. This caused panic that led to the crush, they added.

The event happened during the final days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is marked by a period of fasting.

Last week a major prisoner swap between warring sides in Yemen started, seen as part of stepped-up efforts to end the devastating eight-year conflict.

I hate religious discrimination

Almost all religions have different sects and in the past, most of the religions had sectarian fights, including Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism. However, the sectarian fight continues only in Islam. Muslims are not only fightings against Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, and Jewish people but also among themselves.

Actually, you'd be surprised to hear that there's a lot of fight between different castes of Hinduism, especially in India

I don't disagree. Actually, I frequently hear about "higher casts" killing "lower casts" or vice versa. However, the magnitude of Muslims killing their own brothers and sisters cannot be compared with what the Hindus are doing with their Hindu brothers and sister.

I think ppl place too much importance on their own caste without respect for other ppl's castes. I'm not aware of higher and lower castes.

However, the magnitude of Muslims killing their own brothers and sisters cannot be compared with what the Hindus are doing with their Hindu brothers and sister.

Sure, it happens in many more countries. And obviously, the Taliban rule in Afghanistan is... I'm speechless.

But both instances are sad

I'm still surprised that this conflict is still going on till now. It's very painful that it's a fight between two brother religion. If it's the usual fight between Christians and Muslims, I would understand the tension. But Muslim vs Muslim, it's really bad.

I'm still surprised that this conflict is still going on till now. It's very painful that it's a fight between two brother religion. If it's the usual fight between Christians and Muslims, I would understand the tension. But Muslim vs Muslim, it's really bad.

It's an issue in so many countries. And then of course those countries got involved.
